I bought an iPhone 3GS in August of 2009. Yep, nearly two years ago. In a few months, iOS5 will come out, and a bunch of really sweet features that would be available on a iPhone 4 won’t be available for me with such an ‘old’ phone. So, I stopped in at an AT&T store today. Just for comparison, let’s take a look at prices for the iPhone at AT&T and Verizon:
AT&T old customer: $18 upgrade fee, $199 for the new iPhone with contract
AT&T old customer: $36 fee, $199 for the new iPhone with contract
Verizon new customer: $35 activation fee, $199 for the new iPhone with contract
Verizon old customer: $0 activation fee, $99 – $149 for the new iPhone with contract
Yep, by being a loyal customer of AT&T for almost two years, I’m qualified to save a whopping $18 on the activation/upgrade fee. When my contract is up, I could walk into a Verizon store and get the phone for exactly the same price as AT&T charges. Way to keep my business, assholes.
