Today was one of the worst days ever. It started off innocently enough. I woke up, I got a shower, got dressed, and headed off to work. It turned down, however, when I turned out of my apartment complex. As habit, I look at the road in front to me, just to make sure I’m not running over anything I don’t want to run over. As I passed a little grey spot in the road, I thought it seemed that it had pin feathers and a tiny yellow beak. My mind screamed “BABY BIRD!” (everyone knows how much I love birds), so I screech to a halt and back up towards it. I undo my seat belt and begin to get out of the car, just as a black truck begins to move around my parked car. Because of where I was sitting, to get around me, the truck had to turn about 10 feet away… Right where that baby mockingbird was. ::sniffle:: The poor thing got run over by two tires and bounced along the pavement. It was terrible. I ran toward it, already sobbing “no no no no no” under my breath. I knelt down in the middle of the road and picked up the flailing thing in my hands. It couldn’t have been more than three weeks old, and dying already. The truck had broken both little legs and smashed the tiny yellow beak. Mama Mockingbird chattered angrily at me as I carried it to the grass on the side of the road. It was dead before I got there. I laid it in some soft grass as Mama flew over to scare me away from her baby. I sobbed “I’m sorry” to her, and left, crying myself all the way to work. The work day was busy, the people rude, and close just didn’t come fast enough. I wanted to go home and hug my bunnies all day.
My birthday was as uneventful as unsual. The problem with having a summer birthday is that everyone leaves town in the summer. Most of the people I know were either already out of town and not able or willing to come in, or forgot and left town that weekend. John surprised me by boiling 4 pounds of shrimp and finishing it off with some ice cream. Meggie sent me two embroidered pillowcases (because all of my bed sheets are white, and I want something colorful), Mom sent me some fun bunny stuff, and Larry gave me Wil Wheaton’s new book. Jared remembered to call me, TA gave me a heads up on her page, and Chris gave me a Mononoke Hime keychain. The day was uneventful. I cleaned some and even got a nap. All in all, nothing all that big. No party, but drinking. I’m sure you’re all disappointed.
